From the rivers of the Amazon

Bobinsana (Calliandra angustifolia) is a riverine shrub of the wetlands of Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Colombia. Its feathery pink blossoms carry a fruity sweetness reminiscent of hibiscus, and it is called sirenita, the little mermaid of the river. Our extract comes from Ecuador, where the flowers are collected and slowly concentrated into a paste over about eight weeks.

How we met her

Our founder Christine first met bobinsana as a light tea brewed from fresh blooms on her land in Hawaiʻi. Fifteen minutes into the first cup, her heart sang a new kind of joyful song. She went on to learn from the Ayahuascero who visits twice a year and from the people who gather the flowers, and began making the medicine herself. Read Christine's story

The pathways: an honest note

We would rather tell you the truth about the state of the evidence than manufacture confidence.

Bobinsana has almost no published pharmacology. Phytochemical screening has identified flavonoids and other constituents in Calliandra angustifolia, but there is very little peer-reviewed research into how it acts in the body — no well-characterised receptor targets, no established mechanism. Compare that with kava, where the GABA-A story is well developed, or caapi, where the beta-carboline MAO inhibition is thoroughly described.

What bobinsana has instead is a long ethnobotanical record: centuries of careful, systematic Amazonian practice, held and transmitted by people who worked with this plant closely. That is a real body of knowledge. It is not the same thing as mechanistic research, and we are not going to present it as though it were.

If you want a plant whose pathways are well mapped, that is kava. If you are drawn to bobinsana, come to it through the tradition, which is where the knowledge actually lives.
